South Indian Top Beauties

This could well go down as a year of BO misses for Tollywood’s top actresses. Considering that the Telugu filmmakers prefer to rope in reignwomen for their big-ticket films and offer them hefty pay cheques, the pretty ladies haven’t been able to deliver the desired results so far. Ileana, (Rechipo), Trisha (Sankam), Genelia (Sasirekha Pariynam), Nayanthra (Anjaneyulu) and Hansika (Jayeebhava) have all delivered commercial disasters this year. Does that make our Tollyland beauties a worried lot?

Anushka who’s had a lucky stint this year feels, “BO equations keep changing every Friday” and at the “end of the day only good scripts grabeyeballs.” BO queen Ileana who revised her pay cheque after Kick, confesses that she never has “regrets” after delivering a dud. “I enjoyed doing the comedy film (Rechipo) immensely. Also I never pin hopes on one film because my T-town career is rocking,” she says.

Even Trisha claims that her career is unaffected after her flop Sankam. “Hits and flops are part of our lives. I enjoyed working with Gopichand. I give my best shot for every film. I respect the audience’s verdict but don’t feel heartbroken because a film hasn’t done well,” says the actress.

Clearly, most top actresses seem to have mastered the art of putting a brave face and have learnt how to move on after a flop. Teenage star Hansika claims that the box-office status of Jayebhava is “disappointing” but she hasn’t suffered professionally. “I have a lot of good films in hand and I don’t think one flop can change the way the film industry sees me,”she says confidently. Surprisingly, even director Parasuram doesn’t want to blame Nayanthara for the debacle of Anjaneyulu. “Probably, the audience couldn’t connect to the film. It will be unfair to blame Nayanthara for the film’s commercial status,”he reasons.

Director Meher Ramesh who has worked with Anuskha and has signed Ileana for his next, feels, “Top female stars are an added attraction to a big film. Their presence draws repeat audience. If a film doesn’t work at the box-office that’s because the script/direction etc are not up to the mark. Our leading ladies are charming, hardworking and have their own fan following.”

Given that there’s lots of action expected from Ileana (Shakti), Trisha (Nammo Venkatesa), Genelia (Katha) and Nayanthara (Adurs) in the next few weeks, let’s hope the headturners can spin BO magic again.
